Whether your pet is healthy or ill blood work is vital to their life. As fur parents it’s hard to imagine what’s hurting your pet and that’s why routine blood testing is important. Similar to humans, blood work can be used as a tool in diagnosis. Lab work further helps our veterinarians assess the symptoms that they cannot see or feel. Equally, in healthy pets, bloodwork helps establish normal health levels for each individual pet. This later helps if your pet unfortunately becomes ill, so our veterinarians can compare any changes and better assess your pet’s condition. Annual bloodwork is also recommended for senior pets to detect early signs of any illness.

How can I tell if my pet needs lab work?

There are changes in behaviour in your pet that may need some lab work done to determine the cause. You should look out for weight loss/ lethargy, loss of appetite, increase thirst or urination. Why are blood tests important?

1. To establish baseline information especially pre-anesthetic testing before every surgery. Lab work will tell veterinarians if surgery is safe for your pet and also determine the safest level of anesthesia for them, and what medications are suitable for prescription.
2. To diagnose sick animals. Liver disease and diabetes are two illnesses that can be determined through lab work.

How long does it take to get a dog’s/cat’s blood test result?

Our hospital has a full diagnostic medical laboratory that offers full same day results. Our veterinarians can provide an analysis within nine minutes with the same accuracy as human hospital laboratories.
